Giza North Project “Turbines” Case Study

This case study is for the transport of 4 Generators & 4 Turbines of weight 218 & 278 tons from Dekheila port up to Giza North power station.

Route study

Since the project is located near the Giza North zone, the suitable port for smooth delivery of the project’s material is Dekheila port. Route study began from Dekheila port using the following route:

Ex. Dekheila port – El Agamy road – El Zeraa El-Bahary road – El-kafoury
military check point – Borg El-Arab road– El-Hamam road – Alamin/Wadi Elnatron road – Alex/Cairo desert road – Khatattba Entrance – Khatatba road –up to the job site.

Main obstacles

According to the route survey measurements and calculations there were some obstacles at some points along the route as follows:

  1. Fishery bridge ”El Draa El Bahary”:
    Obstacle:An old overfly bridge that cannot be crossed without reinforcement.
    Solution:Crossing over a steel surface bridge beside the overfly bridge which belongs to the fishery farms after paying fees to the fishery farms
  2. El Hamam bridge
    Obstacle: An old one span surface bridge that cannot be crossed without reinforcement.
    Solution: Constructing a new concrete pipe culvert beside the old bridge to cross over and into the same El Khatatba entrance.

  3. El Khattba entrance
    Obstacle:Narrow maneuvering room at El Khatatba road entrance because of the tollbooth and sidewalk pavement.
    Solution:Removing part of the pavement to enlarge the maneuvering room then returning it to its original condition after the transportation.
  4. El Khattba surface bridge
    Obstacle: A five-span weak surface bridge that cannot be crossed without reinforcement.
    Solution: Reinforcing the bridge after inspection by our consultant and making the necessary calculations and designs.

  5. El Khattba railway crossing
    Obstacle:Narrow maneuvering room at railway crossing needs to be widened.
    Solution:Widening the railway crossing using concrete slabs and leveling and compacting the road beside the railway crossing.

  6. El Khattba overfly bridge
    Obstacle: An eleven-span weak overfly bridge including 3 offshore spans that cannot be crossed without reinforcement.
    Solution: Reinforcing the bridge after inspection by our consultant and making the necessary calculations and designs.

  7. Two steel sign plates
    Obstacle:Two steel pipe racks with low heights.
    Solution:Removing the two pipe racks and remounting them after the transportation.

Transportation

Transportation operation was performed using two 16×3 hydraulic trailers after carrying out all needed calculations including hydraulic and structural stability for the packages for safe transportation in accordance with the prepared route study.

Final destination

Arrival at the final destination at the site location was achieved safely and according to the planned schedule.
The turbine and the generator were lifted up from the trailer bed to their bases using suitable cranes.
